Ad Posting Website using paypal Trouble with Renew, Edit, and Free ads

I have an ad posting website where individuals can post ads. There are several packages and I use the paypal pro to get payment. However I am having problems with Free Ads because when paypal payment is collected it changes the Post Status to Published. However since Free Ads are not sent via paypal the Post status is never changed. Also if a coupon is used that gives them a free ad (total=0) we also have this problem. Is there a hook to conditionally change this field based on total?

Ads last 30 days and I use the post expire plugin to change the post status to draft after 30 days. Then when individuals wants to Renew their ad they can Edit it and then submit and it sends them to Paypal. ( I also used a hook to set the date to that day on Edit entry and the expiration date is recalculated). However, if someone wants to just edit the ad without Renewing before the 30 days is there a way to conditionally change this without resetting the date?
