Using the [frm_search] shortcode, or indeed a shortcode for a custom search bar, how do I include a Cancel/Clear button, next to the Search button?

[frm_search] is the WordPress search form. It has nothing to do with Formdiable.

The Formidable shortcode is [frm-search].
